imo - why would you want a generic social net for a niche group? surely you want to be a subset of a larger network to attract new people, that or have a net with custom functionality.
I have the same question. My reason: none of the major SN's have localization programs or tools that allow speakers of non-major languages to use the system in their languages (translated UI).
Good question. They are growing but i have not be active enough with them to build a "community". I don't believe that is down to the software though. "Community" is in the plans for 2008.
@rgb, It's the customisability that I'm after. I'm looking for a white label service I can fully customise.
@Eirepreneur - I'll check out Kickapps - thanks. But Ning seems fairly white-label-able! :) What can't you do?
@Keoladonaghy - It appears to be possible to make one's own translation of Ning http://help.ning.com/?s=asperformadvancedsearch&asperformadvancedsearch=true&asquerytype=words&aspostspages=posts&asincludefromavailable=true&assortby=relevance&asorder=desc&asresultsperpage=25&as_searchquery=language
@conn Go raibh maith agat! I'll look into it again. Thought I did once and either it wasn't localizable at the time or there was something else about it that made it seem unfit for our purposes.
Ning Language Editor pretty slick - all web based. Finished about 2 pages of 27. Took about 45 minutes. Will check results and report when these pages are done. Mostly dealing with videos so far.
About 4 hours to localize 25% of Ning. No glitches so far. Handles Unicode fine, even in searches. Looks like leveraging is built in. Wish I could do all my localizations like this!

Ning is very good but beware you can't fully white label it. Kickapps might more be a better idea if you need to fully white label.

http://network.sheepstealers.ie/ shows the whitelabel version. There is still the very odd mention of Ning (sign up) but nothing that gets in the way.

@keoladonaghy, Do take a look, and let me know if there's something I should be concerned about. It's got to be fully localisable to meet my needs.

Ning Strike 1 - can't use Unicode characters in your network name.
